CRITICAL ANALYSIS

OBSERVATIONS
12 - 25 November, 2015
JP Art Gallery
18 Battersea Rise, London, SW11 1EE
Benjamin's debut solo show, Observations, consists of around 70 paintings of London, Oxford, Cambridge and further afield, along with some still life and the self portrait that was short-listed for this year's Ruth Borchard Prize.
All painted on location from observation. Now all under one roof.
ENTHUSIASM & DEDICATION
The first time we met, Benjamin was painting landscape from life on the street in Clapham Junction. That was his second session for a painting, which was already good at that time. I wouldn’t know that it could end up so extraordinary until I visited his solo exhibition.
As we talked, I realized that he could stand in the same spot for up to nine times on purpose to create a painting that satisfied him.
Much to my surprise, he had never attended art college/university but gained his high academic skills all from self-training.
THE VALUE OF ART
Previously I visited The Ruth Borchard Self-portrait Prize 2015 where his work was short-listed. We’ve both questioned the judging panel’s decision on the first prize winner. But does it matter where the prizes go? The value of an artwork depends on how deep it reaches the heart of the audiences. He didn’t win a prize. However, situated in between other paintings, his work was outstanding. I would have recognized his painting even if I didn’t know him.
INFLUENCE ON ME
I’ve tried painting landscape from life last Winter. But always abide with loneliness and difficulties despite the occasionally delightful outcomes.
Having met Benjamin, I know that I was not alone. And his fantastic paintings was quite an encouragement. I once believed that I was quite dedicated in the practice of art. Now I know that I can dedicate myself even more. And I should.
My first solo art event would be in 12 days after his. I’ve looked forward to it for long. I thought I was ready, now I understand that it’s still too early. I should keep making effort until I am well-prepared.
